Nutraceuticals Derived from Dietary Spices as Candidate Molecules in Targeting Glioma Signaling Pathways

Abstract

Spices have been used by people for generations as a source of food flavors to increase culinary delicacy. These ingredients not only give the food its authentic color and taste but also render health benefits when consumed. Spices are a rich source of alkaloids, tannins, and phenols which impart good antioxidant, antimicrobial, and anticancer properties and could be targeted as potential therapeutics for several disorders. These spices are said to alter the signaling pathways which are associated with tumor progression and thus cause the downregulation of several angiogenic growth factors and play a major role in tumor suppression. This review deals with certain spices which act as potential candidate molecules in the chemoprevention of glioma. It also deals with the key cell signaling pathways that are modulated by spices and interpret their use as potential nutraceutical ingredients to improve the quality of life of the patients who suffer from major health issues due to the side effects of certain chemotherapeutic drugs.
