This paper reviews psychological aspects of respiratory disorders, in particular asthma and COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease). It discusses definition, epidemiology, risk factors and medical management of both disorders, in the context of psychological and social factors. Psychosocial consequences of asthma are described, as is the psychological management of patients with this respiratory disorder. On the basis of Cochrane reviews, a cautious optimism seems warranted: incorporating self-management training into medical care leads to positives outcomes for patients with asthma.

Psychosocial aspects of COPD are described as well. Regarding psychological management, research on this topic is discussed, both in the setting of pulmonary rehabilitation context as in a setting where the intervention is examined for its effects by itself. It is concluded that self-management training, preferably in combination with medical care, leads to positive outcomes for COPD-patients.

Suggestions for future research pertain to performing studies with stronger designs, longer follow-up periods, and to expanding research into areas such as patients with cystic fibrosis, lung cancer, sarcoidosis, and tuberculosis.
