Compendium of Crop Genome Designing for Nutraceuticals

Abstract

Psidium guajava L., commonly known as guava, is native to the tropical and subtropical regions. It is one of the important commercial fruit crops rich in nutrients and phytochemicals that have many medicinal and nutritional benefits. It is now being recognized as “super fruit” due to the attractive color and compounds, which are known to be active as neutralizers of free radicals and are beneficial to human health. Guava fruit, leaf, bark, and seeds contain bioactive compounds that can function as antioxidants and anti-inflammatory agents, thereby helping in alleviating different types of cancer, diabetes, and infectious diseases and promoting overall health. Guava genetic resources are diverse, with more than 400 germplasm and cultivars available around the world. Morphogenetic and molecular studies have improved our understanding of the guava germplasms. This chapter discusses in detail about the health benefits of phytochemicals, as well as genetic and molecular studies for improvement of health-related traits in guava.
