Introduction
Teaching profession is considered as one of the most popular and esteemed jobs in Korea. Teachers express relatively high satisfaction in comparison to other OCED countries; for instance, about 65% of teachers expressed job satisfaction according to a survey conducted by the OECD in 2018 (Schleicher 2020). Korea is one of the top-performing teacher recruiting systems, by recruiting “the top 5% of each graduating cohort” (Lee et al. 2019, p. 468). This in part is due to the fact that teachers in public schools are given lifetime employment with competitive wages (OECD 2018) and educational rights and autonomy are protected by teachers’ organizations (Ministry of Education [MOE] 2020).
There are different types of teachers working in public education, including nursing teachers, librarians, professional counselors, assistant teachers, and teachers. The MOE and the deputy prime minister governed by presidential decree define the qualifying requirements for each group....
