Wastewater Reuse in Peri-Urban Agriculture Ecosystem: Current Scenario, Consequences, and Control Measures

Water Pollution and Management Practices

Abstract

The demands for water, air, and food have been increased due to rapid growth in the population. Particularly, in water-scarce condition, several countries reuse wastewater for irrigation and that is one of the alternative approaches for compensating the water shortage. In both the developed and developing countries, the long-term applications of wastewater lead to changes in the pattern of its reuse. The present chapter addresses both the aspects of wastewater reuse, i.e., beneficial as well as hazardous. Wastewater contains different nutritive properties which enhance the agricultural productivity but due to the presence of contaminants (heavy metals, pesticides, etc.), it adversely affect the quality of soil, groundwater, and food chain. Long-term irrigation with wastewater in agriculture causes potential risk to the consumers and other components of the environment. The present chapter has discussion on several approaches, such as physical, biological, and molecular, which are applied for the removal of wastewater contaminants. To consider several major challenges related to wastewater irrigation in agricultural areas, suitable management strategies, public-private partnership model, and awareness program should be undertaken to improve substantial benefits and minimize associated health risk.
