Zusammenfassung

Im Jahr 1978 erschien in der medizinischen Fachzeitschrift Lancet ein Kurzbrief des englischen Gynäkologen Patrick Steptoe und des Physiologen Robert Edwards mit der Mitteilung, daß am 25. Juli 1978 in England das erste durch extrakorporale Befruchtung gezeugte Kind geboren wurde, ein sogenanntes „Retortenbaby“ (Steptoe u. Edwards 1978).
