The Corpus Callosum

Abstract

Corpus callosotomy is a palliative procedure for patients with multifocal or diffuse drug-resistant seizures not amenable to resective epilepsy surgery. It is usually indicated to mitigate seizures in patients with drug refractory epilepsy, especially in children. The goal is to achieve a potential reduction in seizure frequency or intensity and to offer a better quality of life to the patients and relatives. Callosotomy can be performed using basic microsurgical techniques or via endoscopy. Moreover, stereotactic laser interstitial thermal therapy and gamma knife radiosurgery have recently been used to reduce the invasiveness of the procedure. However, data available on the long-term results of these techniques are not enough to evidence their effectiveness.
