Environment and Climate-smart Food Production

Abstract

Biogas, one of the most important renewable energy sources, is obtained by anaerobic fermentation of organic wastes. While energy is obtained at the end of biogas production processes, in addition to this, biogas digestates generated as a result of production can be considered as a quality fertilizer source due to their chemical content. The chemical contents of biogas digestates, which stand out due to their output without using fossil fuels and being a source of organic fertilizer, vary according to the feedstocks used during biogas production. It has been tried on many crops in the agricultural field and significant results have been obtained to increase yield. However, since every biogas plant does not work with the same processes, the characteristics of the produced biogas digestate may change. For this reason, some pre and post-treatments can be applied. Also, the separation of the digestate generated after the production processes in solid-liquid forms affects the fertilizer content and quality of the digestate. Considering all its properties, although there are some usage risks, biogas digestate is seen as a quality fertilizer source due to the reduction of fossil fuel consumption, improvement of soil properties and its place in sustainable agriculture.
