Abstract

Ecosystem-based Adaptation (EbA) is becoming a preferred climate change adaptation approach worldwide. However, in mountain ecosystems, little has been documented about the practical governance and institutional challenges of EbA implementation and how to tackle them through participatory processes. This article describes a participatory process that involved multiple institutions and individuals in the implementation of EbA interventions during 2014–2018 for watershed restoration in Lamjung, a vulnerable mountainous district of Nepal. It also briefly reports site-specific EbA interventions and accomplishments in Lamjung. Finally, key lessons learned in the process from the perspective of local implementation, national governance, and international technical cooperation are presented. Such lessons learned are expected to be transformed into practice in other developing countries within the mountain context for promoting replication and upscaling of EbA.
