Abstract

In a representative sample of over 4000 third, fourth and fifth year secondary school pupils, 3.6% acknowledged having abused solvents to the point of intoxication. This proportion is almost certainly an underestimate of the true prevalence of solvent abuse because it does not take into account false negative questionnaire responses, and it neglects the higher rate of solvent abuse among school absentees.
