So far in this occasional series a number of European headmasters have given accounts of ideas which inform the work of their schools — schools building on long traditions even when not actually themselves of ancient foundation. But many of the world's schools in the younger countries are, at the same time as they are trying to develop a modern educational programme and ethos based on elements of both indigenous and imported cultures, also still engaged in a struggle for physical survival, stabilisation and, as opportunity allows, expansion. The present article by a Burmese headmistress therefore adds an indispensable perspective to this international series of “pictures of schools”. The Editors.
