Abstract
There are many textbooks on petroleum geology, which explain the complex processes that are responsible for the generation and entrapment of petroleum: one of the best is “Petroleum Geology” by F.K.North. It will therefore be sufficient here to touch on only a few aspects of petroleum geology to set the scene for the debate on the state of the World’s reserves. We must remember that oil is a natural resource, whose occurrence, distribution, and eventual production, are subject to geological constraints. Each discovery depends on a unique combination of geological circumstances.
