Abstract

Single-site or laparoendoscopic single-incision surgery (LESS) was introduced as a technical advancement of multiport minimally invasive surgery, with a theoretical advantage of less postoperative pain and improved cosmesis. Advances in instrument and scope design, as well as access devices (ports) specifically designed to have multiple channels, have been developed in response to a growing interest in this technology by surgeons and patients alike. However, single-incision laparoscopic surgery introduced several technical challenges for the surgeon, including loss of triangulation on target anatomy, crowding of instruments and instrument collisions, and awkward operative ergonomics. Together, these result in long operative times and a long learning curve. Nonetheless, LESS has been successfully performed on general surgical, urological, and gynecological operations. The robotic platform for laparoscopic single-site surgery was specifically designed to mitigate the difficulties imposed by LESS. Early results demonstrate feasibility, decrease in operative time, and a shortened learning curve.
