25th anniversary of the Journal of Geographical Systems

The year 2023 is the twenty-fifth anniversary of the Journal of Geographical Systems (JGS) . This commemorative issue is a highly appropriate occasion to acknowledge the journal’s debt to the many people who have contributed to its success. First and foremost among these people are the founding editors, Manfred M. Fischer and Arthur Getis, whose hard work and ideas led to the creation of the journal. They played a crucial role in guiding the journal from the initial idea to fruition. Significant contributions were also made by Antonio Paez who followed Arthur Getis in the position of editor in 2008, and more recently since 2018 by Petra Staufer-Steinnocher as associate editor. Over the years, the journal has built a reputation for publishing outstanding work in the fields of spatial analysis and GIScience, and spatial statistics and econometrics, and so it is suitable to commemorate the twenty-fifth anniversary by publishing a special issue with reprints of 25 of the most influential papers, published in the journal. The articles included represent some of the most downloaded and most cited articles, selected in cooperation with members of the editorial board. We hope that everyone will enjoy this special issue and (re)discover all these papers that can be viewed as milestones of the journal. Please, enjoy free access to all papers until the end of 2023.
