Abstract
Violence among young people has significant personal, emotional and financial costs (David-Ferdon and Simon 2014). Official crime statistics from both the USA (Hockenberry and Puzzanchera 2014) and the UK (MoJ 2014) show that approximately 20 per cent of all recorded crime committed by young people is of a violent nature. Given the scope and scale of this issue, it is unsurprising that a considerable amount of clinical and political attention has been directed towards understanding and reducing violence perpetrated by young people. This has resulted in a large body of published work about risk assessment processes, intervention strategies and specific programmes. However, rather than assisting the practitioner, this multitude of advice can be contradictory, overwhelming, biased, context specific or simply out of date.
