Abstract

We feel privileged to introduce this volume to our readers. It originates from a conference held on May 6, 2011, at the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education of the University of Toronto (OISE/UT), convened as a tribute to Ruth Hayhoe. As a comparativist and sinologist, Ruth has devoted her life and career to the study of Chinese education and culture. Arguably, her work over the years serves to bridge education philosophies and ideas across cultures in the East and the West. In the past three decades or so, numerous Chinese students and scholars have used Ruth’s work as milestones for their academic journeys in the field of comparative education, while many of their Western peers benefitted from the East-West bridge that Ruth has helped build in broadening their career horizons. Among them certainly are the two editors of this volume.
