Abstract
The high growth figures of western European banks penetrating the Central, Eastern, and South-eastern European (CEE) markets are impressive. By October 2005, about 77 percent of banks in CEE countries were in foreign hands, and the number continues to increase.2 The pace of internationalization gives opportunities, including for economic growth and for entrepreneurial initiatives,3 but supervisors still need to maintain a grip on the solidity of the credit institutions.
