Abstract
Some aspects of the influence of ionic vibrations on transitions of trapped electrons are surveyed mainly from a theoretical point of view. After a discussion of the significance and the validity of the adiabatic approximation radiative transitions are treated on the basis of Lax's general expression for the moments of the spectral distribution. The first two of these are explicitely calculated for a simple model containing a large number of degrees of freedom (Huang and Rhys) and the influence of the Condon approximation is discussed. The results are compared with Mollwo's experimental data on Alkali-halide F center absorption lines. Then certain features of models containing only one configurational coordinate for the description of the ionic motion are discussed. Finally attention is given to radiationless transitions in so far as they are induced by the lattice vibrations. First the general method of attack is explained (method of Slater Sums, Kubo) and comment is given on some recent work. Then more detailed features of the process of such a transition are discussed on the basis of the same simplified model as used above in treating radiative transitions.
