Curcumin and Neurodegenerative Diseases

Abstract

The use of plants for the prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and improvement of diseases dates back to antiquity and has been widely employed in traditional medicine. Among the various plant families, the Zingiberaceae family has garnered special attention due to its ability to produce beneficial bioactive substances for the food, pharmaceutical, and cosmetic industries. A prominent member of this family is Curcuma longa, commonly known as turmeric or saffron, which contains a compound called curcumin that possesses potential biopharmacological activity. Curcumin is considered safe by the American Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and does not exhibit any side effects when consumed in moderate amounts. Numerous studies have been conducted on curcumin due to its therapeutic potential in various diseases, particularly in neurodegenerative disorders such as Alzheimer’s disease. Research indicates that this substance holds remarkable potential as an effective and safe treatment. In this context, this chapter focuses on the characteristics of C. longa and reviews studies related to the use of curcumin in treating Alzheimer’s disease.
