Curcumin and Neurodegenerative Diseases

Abstract

Turmeric (Curcuma longa L.) has many chemical qualities and is also used as a medicinal herb. India is the world’s biggest producer, consumer, and exporter of turmeric. Plants have been used as medicine for a very long time. It was first utilized with rituals and prayers as the only traditional technique of preventing or healing illnesses and injuries inside conventional communities. Then, several phytotherapeutics and herbal medicines used in medicine were found, thanks to ethnobotany. Neurodegenerative diseases (NDs) refer to illnesses that can take time to manifest and are defined by the progressive loss of neurons in the neural tissues of the nervous system. Some causes of NDs include genetic anomalies, protein abnormalities, oxidative stress, and exposure to harmful agents. The current chapter aims to discuss studies demonstrating turmeric’s effectiveness against neurodegenerative diseases and its historical use as a medicinal plant in complementary and alternative medicine. Due to its low cost and lack of side effects, curcumin has attracted much interest due to its success in multiple preclinical trials for NDs, demonstrating that turmeric might be a candidate for medication. Only actions that can contribute to the non-evolution or prevention of NDs are currently available as treatments; thus, taking simple precautions like increasing the consumption of spices like turmeric in the diet may help prevent these health problems.
