Plant Pathogen Interaction

Abstract

Plants are influenced by various biotic and abiotic stresses, which affect survival, growth, and yield. Among these, plant pathogens including oomycetes, fungi, bacteria, viruses, and pests drastically damage the crops. Plant–pathogen interaction is an intricate and complex process. It is therefore essential to counteract this yield loss in order to efficiently increase the surplus production of crops. A shift in studies from the traditional to molecular level has facilitated the elucidation of the detailed mechanism of host–pathogen interactions luring the interest of scientists in the field of genome editing. The editing techniques include ZFNs, TALENs, and CRISPR/Cas9 system. Genome editing provides a platform to precisely alter the genes. The approach can therefore be applied to develop resistance against pathogens. The chapter elaborates detailed plethora of these genome editing techniques, including mechanism and their applications in crop improvement. It comprises certain advancements in TALEN and CRISPR techniques such as TALEN-gene drive mutagenesis, multiplex CRISPR, biomimicking, and CRISPR-mediated editing of S genes to improve resistance against pathogens in crops. The chapter also covers the regulatory aspects of genetically modified crops and discusses the production of non-transgenic crop plants. Altogether, we briefly highlight some paradigms for acquiring pathogen-resistant plants through genome editing.
