Advanced and Innovative Approaches of Environmental Biotechnology in Industrial Wastewater Treatment

Abstract

Heavy metal contamination is a result of increased human activity and industrialization. These metals are non-biodegradable and are highly toxic to the environment. As a result, there is a rising demand for the development of an innovative, economical and environmentally sustainable approach for the remediation of heavy metals. This can be accomplished in a variety of ways. Conventional methods are inefficient, expensive and can also result in secondary pollution. As a result of these drawbacks, alternative strategies such as the use of bacteria, plants (phytoremediation), fungi (mycoremediation) and algae (phycoremediation) are implemented. In order to optimize these processes, new technologies such as nanotechnology and genetic engineering are being applied in this field. Due to their unique properties, such as high adsorption capacity and selectivity, nanoparticles are efficacious sorbents for the removal of heavy metals from industrial effluents and wastewater. Furthermore, recent advancements in bioremediation of heavy metals have been summarized.
