Abstract
Cancer is emerging globally as one of the most important public health concerns. Lung, colorectal, prostate, stomach, and breast cancers account for most of the cancer-related deaths in the year 2020. Transformation of normal cells into precancerous lesion and to a malignant tumor occurs through a series of complex molecular process. Due to the complexity of this disease, multiple treatment modalities including radiotherapy, oncosurgery, chemotherapy, and hormonal and immunotherapy are followed. Many of these treatments suffer from serious limitations such as high cost, prolonged hospitalization, recurrences, side effects, toxicities of the treatment, and reduced quality of life. Prolonged chemotherapeutic drug treatments enable the growth of resistant cancer cells that later do not respond to treatment regimens. In such cases, combinations of different modalities are prescribed. Natural active constituents from plants or the plant formulations have been found to act in synergy with cancer chemotherapeutic drugs. The plant constituents enhance the cytotoxic efficacy of the drug; decrease the dosage of drug, thereby reducing its toxicity and side effects; and enhance the accumulation of the drug by blocking the transporters or by multitargeting different cancer-related genes or proteins.
