Abstract

In 1752, Swedish chemist discovered a new kind of ore; scientists later identified it as ceria and the element cerium. Several uses of cerium, such as light-emitting enhancers, flint stones, electromagnetic carbon rods, were discovered. In 1947, Morrogh H in the U.K. found that if cerium (Ce) and other rare earth elements were added to hypereutectic gray cast iron and incubated, they formed alloys with Si, Mn, and Zr, and that graphite was rendered spherical if the content of Ce in molten iron exceeded 0.02%. At almost the same time, Gangnebin AP in the U.S. pointed out that with the addition of magnesium to molten iron and subsequent inoculation with ferrosilicon, when the content of manganese in molten iron was more than 0.04%, spherical graphite could be obtained.
