Abstract
It is suggested that a myriad of plant-derived natural products may present immunomodulation properties, being an important source for future development of immunomodulators to be used in immunotherapies. Indeed, various phytomedicines were proved to modulate components of inflammatory pathways and are used to combat cell aging, atherosclerosis, cancer, diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, autoimmune disease, and Parkinson’s disease, among others. These plants show signs of operating through immunostimulant, immunoadjuvant, and immunosuppressant activities or by affecting the effector arm of the immune response. The immunomodulation potential of three important medicinal woody plants, Moringa oleifera Lam. (Moringaceae), Azadirachta indica A. Juss (Meliaceae), and Ginkgo biloba L. (Ginkgoceae), is discussed in this chapter, which were selected based on their economic importance worldwide. This chapter does not cover the vast literature available for these plant species and intends to arouse the reader’s interest in them.
