Abstract

Antibiotics are one of the commonly used class of drugs in hospitals. Development of antibiotics has transformed modern medicine. Yet the discovery of newer antibiotics has not kept in pace with the increasing prevalence of antibiotic resistance. Antibiotic resistant infections place substantial health and economic burden on the health care system. Antimicrobial stewardship has been defined as a coherent set of actions which promote using antimicrobials responsibly. This chapter describes some of the steps to improve antimicrobial usage in intensive care unit followed by some of the approaches to set up an antibiotic stewardship programme. Institution specific needs, resources and priorities need to be considered when designing an antibiotic stewardship programme.
