De Observer, die al van 1791 dateert, is — of moet men zeggen ‘was?’ — Engelands meest gezaghebbende zondagsblad. Vooral sinds 1948, het jaar dat David Astor hoofdredacteur werd, heeft de Observer zich ontwikkeld tot een krant van een uitzonderlijk hoog niveau: hij biedt betrouwbare informatie en serieuze commentaren, maar is tegelijk vaak amusant door zijn levendige en oorspronkelijke toon.
