On se propose dans cet article d’étudier la démarche qui conduit à la démonstration de résultats rigoureux en Mécanique statistique hors d’équilibre, en montrant qu’elle est rendue possible par l’existence, à certaines limites, de propriétés asymptotiques caractéristiques des systèmes à un très grand nombre de particules. Après avoir défini les importantes notions de description réduite autonome et de processus limite, on examine le passage du niveau microscopique au niveau cinétique qui fournit un exemple significatif d’une telle démarche. Dans le cas d’un fluide idéal, ce passage est bien décrit par la limite de Boltzmann-Grad et par le théorème de Lanford, dont la démonstration permet de déduire le régime cinétique de Boltzmann à partir de la description microscopique et de déterminer clairement dans quelles conditions peuvent être obtenues l’irréversibilité de l’évolution et la réduction de la description de l’état du système.
