Abstract

Nitrification is the process by which microorganisms oxidize ammonium to nitrate and derive energy from the oxidation for subsistence. Since nitrification is inter-linked with the mineralization-immobilization and N loss processes, it is an important N transformation which is related not only to the efficiency of fertilizer N, but also to the contamination of the environment. In this chapter some aspects of nitrification relating to investigations in China will be discussed.
