Abstract

Located in the Syrian-African rift valley, the Dead Sea is a terminal lake showing some very unique properties from a geochemical point of view. It is recorded to be not only the lowest point on the continents (the surface is at 409 meters below sea level and the deepest part of it reaches -731 meters) (Hall, 1996), but also one of the saltier and larger hypersaline lakes in the world (close to 34% total dissolved salts) (Yechieli et al., 1995).
