Abstract

Gene flow is the movement of genes between different gene pools (Endler, 1977; Slatkin, 1985). This primarily includes movement of genes among individuals within separated populations or subpopulations. It can be extended to include movement of genetic elements between taxa (i.e., introgression). The factors affecting gene flow are environmental (e.g., substrate availability and climatic events), biological (e.g., reproductive, developmental, migratory, and dispersal mechanisms), and genetic (e.g., recombination and integration of foreign sequences). In many discussions of gene flow, either the populations or the individuals are referred to as the moving elements. In reality, the genes and genomes are being tracked.
