Joining of SiC Ceramics

  • Chapter
Silicon Carbide Ceramics—1

Abstract

First, in order to understand the joining of SiC, the wettability of various molten metals to SiC and reactions between various metals and SiC are reviewed. Second, the state of the art of joining of SiC ceramics is described using the following classification: inorganic adhesives, metallizing, active metal brazing, brazing with frit or glass, solid-state bonding, and reaction bonding. Furthermore, several methods for the reduction of thermal expansion mismatch in joining ceramic to metal are described: using an inert layer having an intermediate thermal expansion coefficient, using a soft or ductile insert, balancing of thermal stress, and the effect of phase transformation.
