Abstract

Sol gel chemistry is based on inorganic polymerization reactions. Oxopolymers can be obtained through hydrolysis and condensation of molecular precursors such as metal alkoxides. The chemical control of these reactions is performed through the design of molecular precursors. The modification of the metal coordination sphere can be obtained by using nucleophilic chemical additives such as organic acids, β-diketones, allied derivatives or even solvents. They lead to a modification of the precursor functionality and allow a control of particles growth. Monodispersed colloids or long chain polymers can be synthesized through the chemical modification of metal alkoxides by nucleophilic reagents. Some ligands are not removed upon condensation and thus can behave as network formers. Mixed organic-inorganic gels can be synthesized leading to the formation of new materials.
