Environmental contaminants and chemoreception in fishes

  • Chapter
Fish Chemoreception

Part of the book series: Fish & Fisheries Series ((FIFI,volume 6))

Abstract

Anthropogenic wastes are continuously being discharged or leached into the aquatic environment. Dilution processes and seasonal inputs (e.g. snowmelt) subject aquatic organisms to fluctuating concentrations of chemicals. There is increasing concern regarding the ultimate, often unpredictable consequences of these changes in water quality. The short- and long-term effects of toxic substances on fish are two of the most important aspects of water pollution.
