Abstract

Much of the material of these two lectures is covered in greater detail in the recent book by Eland,1 and this can be recommended for background reading. As has been indicated in the previous lecture, the main photon sources used for UV-PES are the He-I and He-II resonance emissions, though occasionally Ne-I is useful. Most of these two lectures will be concerned with studies made at room temperature or slightly above, but studies at high temperatures (˜1000 K or greater) are potentially very interesting for inorganic chemists. Although not much work at high temperatures has yet been reported, it is certain that the literature of high temperature work will expand, and I shall make occasional references to some of the particular problems of such work.
