Structure and Electronic Relations Between Molecular Clusters and Small Particles: An Essay to the Understanding of Very Dispersed Metals

  • Chapter
Aspects of Homogeneous Catalysis

Part of the book series: Aspects of Homogeneous Catalysis ((AHCA,volume 3))

Abstract

Heterogeneous catalysis over supported metals requires, in general, the largest metallic surface for the minimum content of the metal itself. This implies that the surface/volume ratio of the metallic particles must be the highest in order to achieve the highest efficiency of the catalyst. Consequently, researches done in this field were mainly oriented to produce more and more dispersed catalysts. Progressively the range of particle size has been decreased from very large particles of 1000 Å to about 100 Å and finally down to about 10 Å and below. As early as 1964 Rabo et al. [1] proposed the now well accepted concept of ‘atomic dispersion’ in the case of zeolite supported platinum.
