Developments in Acrylonitrile—Butadiene Rubber (NBR) and Future Prospects

  • Chapter
Developments in Rubber Technology—2

Part of the book series: The Developments Series ((POLS,volume 37))

Summary

Nitrile rubber (NBR) has been manufactured on a large scale for more than 40 years and is now the standard elastomer for rubber goods needing resistance to oils, greases, and liquid fuels. In accordance with the desired processing characteristics and properties of the finished goods, NBR is offered in a wide range of grades with several different physical forms. Four decades of experience in the manufacture, compounding, processing, and practical application of NBR have taught manufacturers and processors many ways of optimising certain properties or their combinations in respect of specific uses.

Where certain requirements are concerned, especially resistance to heat and the alcohol-containing liquid fuels of the future, NBR, as known at present, could soon become inadequate. Nevertheless manufacturers and the rubber industry are already working on problems whose solutions will retain for this important synthetic rubber its whole range of applications; in addition they are developing modern processing techniques.
