Abstract
The fine structure of early amelogenesis is studied in the pig. The developing ameloblast has long apical processes (about 10 µm) which touch with the odontoblastic process within the predentin. Enamel tubules, containing the processes of the ameloblast and the odontoblast, are observed in early enamel formation. Later this tubule is mineralized, so that it cannot be found in the mature enamel. These findings are compared with those of primitive mammalian enamel, and their possible functional significance is discussed.
