Abstract

There have been very few attempts to quantify the seaweeds along large stretches of coast. The exceptions include Norway, Scotland, Nova Scotia and California. Michanek (1975) challenged field phycologists to ‘produce the data from which a better evaluation of the world’s seaweed resources can be made’. Michanek (1981) further stated that data on seaweeds from different parts of the world are hard to compare as there are almost as many assessment methods as there are researchers, and the procedures by which data have been obtained are seldom satisfactorily described if one wants to compare results.
