Abstract
The anionic polymerizations of 2-isopropenylnaphthalene (IPN) with butyllithium in toluene are described. Because of its low ceiling temperature at 23.9°C, high monomer concentration, low polymerization temperature at 5°C, and the addition of THF or dimethoxyethane as solvating agents, were utilized in order to increase the polymer yield. The copolymerization of IPN and styrene can lead to higher conversion, partially because the styrene comonomer can act as “in-situ” capping agent to prevent the depolymerization of IPN sequence in the backbone of S/IPN copolymer. The Tg of the poly(S/IPN) (50/50 wt ratio) segment was found to be 130°C which is much lower than the Tg of 221°C reported for poly(IPN) at infinite, molecular weight. The Tg of IPN segment in the IPN-B diblock copolymer of this study was found to be about 200°C. Some mechanical properties were also measured for these diblock co- and terpolymers.
