Abstract

In the natural history of a tumor, the potential for metastases exists early. In the venous effluent of an isolated adenocarcinoma of a mouse ovary, an astonishing 3–4 × 106 cells per gram of tumor was released during 24 hours (9). Although it appears that metastatic spread is a random event, both experimental and clinical observations suggest that it is a consequence of complex interactions. Although the mechanisms are unclear, there is evidence for active organ selection by the metastatic tumor cells.
