Abstract

Definitions of soil-engaging implements are outlined as a prelude to more detailed descriptions of individual tillage prediction models. The assumed conditions and failure geometries, and relative advantages and disadvantages of each model for predicting forces and disturbed area are presented. It is concluded that, although soil forces can be predicted with acceptable accuracy, soil disturbance is difficult to predict from models but simple guidelines can be used to advantage. From the brief description of two soil compaction models, it is concluded that models are of most value in ranking the effects of various wheel geometries and arrangements, and in investigating the sensitivity of the wheel and soil input variables.
