Abstract

This review covers the relationship between remotely sensed microwave data and data obtained in-situ or from earth based remote sensing systems both for validation of algorithms and as supplemental information for deriving a geophysical quantity. Parameters obtained from the satellite borne microwave radiometers, the Scanning Multichannel Microwave Radiometer (SMMR) and the Special Sensor Microwave Imager (SSM/I) are emphasized. These include sea surface temperature and wind speed, integrated atmospheric water vapor, cloud liquid water and rain rate.
