Abstract

This paper presents a discussion of the basic relationships for commonly encountered transport phenomena in laser surface modification, with the laser serving as the heat source for the processes. In recent years numerical modelings of the transport phenomena have contributed much to our understanding. On the other hand, in quantitative details and some key qualitative details there are still some disagreement among the different computations. It will be demonstrated in this paper that much important qualitative and semi-quantitative information can be obtained more economically, and perhaps with greater insight, by approximate scoping analyses. Such an analysis usually can directly yield scaling information, valuable for process optimization. In addition, a scoping analysis of neglected or poorly known mechanisms can also point out difficulties and limitation in the predictability of certain processes. Understanding these limitations a priori will permit a worker to judge the validity and limitations of numerical modeling results and properly evaluate the potential worth of planning modeling efforts.
