In hoofdstuk 19 is een begin gemaakt met de uitleg van een aantal wetenschappelijke begrippen die behoren bij diagnostiek in het algemeen en het gebruik van diagnostische tests in het bijzonder. Daar is niet alleen ingegaan op basisbegrippen zoals validiteit en sensitiviteit, maar ook op de interpretatie van diagnostische tests. Bewust is de bespreking van allerlei statistische aspecten zo summier mogelijk gehouden. Dit hoofdstuk is hierop een vervolg: nu worden statistische begrippen (met name de correlatiecoëfficiënten) die een rol spelen bij de bepaling van de wetenschappelijke waarde van de diagnostiek, nader toegelicht. Ook in het Nederlands Tijdschrift voor Fysiotherapie worden regelmatig artikelen gepubliceerd over diagnostisch onderzoek, waarin een breed scala van statistische technieken wordt gebruikt. Doel van dit hoofdstuk is praktiserende paramedici beter in staat te stellen publicaties over diagnostisch onderzoek ook op hun rekentechnische merites te beoordelen. Het onderzoek uit hoofdstuk 19 wordt weer als voorbeeld gebruikt.1
