Abstract
Choosing whether a patient is suitable for breast reconstruction involves many different decisions, including when to have surgery and what type of reconstruction might be appropriate. Most women are suitable for some form of breast reconstruction. In the preoperative consultation it is important to assess what options are suitable for the patients and to be realistic about how the breast will look, to discuss what is involved and to discuss risks and complications. Factors that influence choice include the patient’s cancer and how it is best treated, the patient’s general health, including whether the patient has diabetes, the patient’s drug history, including steroid use, the patient’s preferences, the need for radiotherapy and the patient’s smoking habits.
