Summary
In the pulp and paper industry large amounts of an acetic acid (0.1–0.4 mol/l) and furfurol (0.005–0.03 mol/l) containing wastewater with high organic load (COD up to 20.000 mg O2/I) are produced by concentration of sulfite-spent liquor.
The continuous anaerobic digestion of this wastewater to biogas (CH4 + CO2) was examined in a laboratory scale fermentor under mesophilic (37 °C) and thermophilic (60 °C) conditions. A carbon elimination of more than 90% and a COD-reduction of about 85% were obtained at a retention time of 12–14 days.
As typical microorganisms Methanosarcina was detected in mesophilic and thermophilic enrichment cultures by the fluorescence microscope.
These results indicate that most of the organic material in this wastewater can be eliminated by anaerobic digestion and the biogas formed can be used as a fuel.
