Zusammenfassung

Die “dritte Welle” der Demokratisierungen, die in den Systemwechseln in den mittel- und osteuropäischen Staaten seit 1989 ihren Höhepunkt fand, hat die Demokratietheorie vor neue Herausforderungen gestellt. Ihr einflußreicher modernisierungstheoretischer Strang geht von der These aus, daß die Bedingung einer erfolgreichen Demokratisierung im sozioökonomischen Entwicklungsstand der entsprechenden Länder liege. Der sozioökonomische Entwicklungsstand wurde hierbei mit einem breiten Spektrum von Variablen vergleichend untersucht, das die politische Kultur, die Klassenstruktur, das Pro-Kopf-Einkommen, ökonomische Produktivität, den Grad an “civic culture” und den Entwicklungsstand der staatlichen Bürokratie umfaßte.
