Abstract

Craniofacial surgery refers to surgical procedures that are not limited to the viscerocranium but include the neurocranium. Since the skull is opened, these operations are performed in collaboration with neurosurgeons. Craniofacial surgery represents a further development or combination of existing surgical procedures. It was initiated by Tessier (Ann Chir Plast 12:273, 1967) and further developed in particular by Marchac and Renier (Craniofacial surgery for craniosynostosis, Little, Brown, Boston, 1982) and later by Mühling (Zur operativen Behandlung der prämaturen Schädelnahtsynostosen, Julius-Maximilians-Universität Würzburg, Habillitationsschrift, 1986; Therapy for severe craniostenoses, In Marchac D (eds) Craniofacial surgery, Springer, Berlin, p 88, 1987) for the treatment of craniofacial malformations in childhood. Craniofacial malformations are mainly caused by premature closure of cranial sutures. Virchow recognized that premature synostosis inhibits the development of bone perpendicular to the affected suture, with concomitant increased expansion in the direction of the affected suture (Virchow Verh Phys Med Ges Würzburg 2:230–271, 1851/1852). This results in lawful cranial deformations, the analysis of which can be inferred inversely to the affected suture.
