Zusammenfassung

Ein medizinischer Notfall ist eine plötzlich auftretende, unerwartete und bedrohliche oder bedrohlich empfundene Situation, die einer sofortigen (professionellen) Intervention bedarf. Man versteht darunter lebensbedrohliche oder die Lebensqualität beeinträchtigende Störungen v.a. des Bewusstseins, der Atmung, der Herz-Kreislauf- und Stoffwechselfunktionen, aber auch dramatische Störungen anderer Körperfunktionen. Notfälle im Rahmen der Palliativversorgung von Kindern und Jugendlichen müssen gemäß den Definitionen der WHO für die Palliativmedizin stets die physischen, psychosozialen und existenziellen Auswirkungen des Notfalls und der möglichen darauf folgenden Intervention auf den Patienten und seine Familie berücksichtigen. Neben den Notfällen, die in der klinischen Praxis geläufig sind, werden in diesem Kapitel auch seltene Notfälle thematisiert, wie z.B. das Vena cava superior-Syndrom.
